Champion Son Of ShamExpress Brilliant Again In Sprint Cup

ShamExpress' imperious son Ka Ying Rising was brilliant again at Sha Tin on Sunday, confirming his status as the World’s Leading Sprinter, when winning the Group II The Sprint Cup (1200m) on his way to Champion’s Day and the much-anticipated Everest appearance in Sydney.

Starting at the odds of $1.05, jockey Zac Purton was aggressive from the gates on Ka Ying Rising but once clear of the inside runners was happy to let an enthusiastic California Spangle cross him.

Upon straightening Purton gave Ka Ying Rising rein, cleared them in a few strides and coasted to the post with victory secured, as he’s done multiple times previously.

On the line he had Helios Express (Toronado) three lengths in arrears with Lucky With You (Artie Schiller) third.

The immediate target is the $HK22million Group I Chairman’s Sprint Prize on April 27 over 1200m where international runners will come for a crack.

Then all eyes will be on the Everest in October for the son of ShamExpress for which he is currently the ruling $2.50 favourite.

It’s the 12th win from 14 starts for Ka Ying Rising, the first and only winner for his dam Missy Moo who unfortunately died in 2022.

She was a five-time winning Per Incanto mare from one of the most iconic families in the NZ Studbook, interestingly not one generally noted for sprinting prowess.

She traces directly back to blue hen mare Taiona, the dam of Champion 3YO and Victoria Derby winner Sovereign Red, Melbourne Cup winner Gurner’s Lane, with the family also featuring another modern day superstar Mr Brightside.
