Timeform Declares Hong Kong Sprinter Among Century’s Elite

In a strong declaration that is sending ripples through the international racing scene, highly respected British ratings agency Timeform has placed Hong Kong sprinter KA YING RISING (ShamExpress) among the greatest speedsters of the modern era.

With a current Timeform rating of 135, the David Hayes-trained star is not only the highest-rated racehorse in the world as of September 2025, but is now officially regarded as Hong Kong’s greatest sprinter of the 21st century, eclipsing even iconic names like Silent Witness and Sacred Kingdom.

That rating of 135 places KA YING RISING just one point shy of Timeform’s joint-highest sprinting figures this century — 136, held by the legendary Australian mare Black Caviar and Britain’s Battaash. Both were renowned for their blistering pace and consistency at the elite level, and now Ka Ying Rising is being spoken about in the same breath.

The five-year-old son of ShamExpress has strung together an incredible 13 consecutive victories, with his most recent triumph — a dominant win under a heavy impost in the Chief Executive’s Cup at Sha Tin — only strengthening the belief that we are witnessing something truly special. This performance came off a spell, further underscoring his class, constitution, and versatility.

Timeform Flat Racing Editor David Johnson said the sprinter's current rating was earned following his authoritative win in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize in April, where he dismantled a high-quality field that included Japanese sprinter Satono Reve, doing so by a much wider margin than Lazzat achieved when beating the same rival at Royal Ascot.

“Hong Kong has been home to some world-class sprinters down the years,” Johnson said. “Silent Witness and Sacred Kingdom were top-class at their peak, but in Ka Ying Rising, the territory may have produced one better still. His Chairman’s Sprint win was emphatic, and his return win under a big weight only confirmed what the ratings already suggested — this is a once-in-a-generation sprinter.”

KA YING RISING, the dual horse of the year and outstanding Hong Kong based galloper is in for an exciting new prep as he trialled brilliantly at Sha Tin last week and continues to be the early $1.90 favourite for the 2025 Gr.1 Everest in October.

Aiming to win a second straight HKSAR Chief Executive’s Cup Handicap (1200m) at the 2025/26 season’s curtain-raiser meeting next month, KA YING RISING couldn’t have been more impressive as he sauntered across the finishing line by 14-1/4 lengths.

The next chapter in Ka Ying Rising’s story could cement his place in the sport’s history books. He is the current $1.70 favourite for next month’s $20 million Everest at Randwick, the world’s richest race on turf. It will mark the gelding’s first run outside Hong Kong and his toughest test to date — taking on the best sprinters from Australia and beyond on their home turf.

With Timeform ratings now placing Ka Ying Rising above all global contenders in 2025, expectations are sky-high for his Australian debut.

Ka Ying Rising's father SHAMEXPRESS stands 2025 season at a fee of $20,000 + GST.
