Plenty of spirit in Group win

3 Dec 2019, RACENEWS

The stocks of ‘young gun’ sire Charm Spirit (Invincible Spirit) continue to rise with the win by 3YO colt Scorpz in the Gr.3 Wellington Stakes at Otaki on Friday confirming the cracking start Charm Spirit has made at stud.

Scorpz is the third 2019 Australasian Spring Group winner for Invincible Spirit’s triple Gr.1 winning miler whose first-crop southern hemisphere-bred progeny have now smashed through the million-dollar barrier in prizemoney earnings.

Scorpz displayed all the fighting qualities of his sire when accelerating to lead at the top of the straight and then showing his determined spirit to repel the strong challenge of Shenanigans (Ocean Park).

“Gee he’s a lovely colt,” commented leading trainer Stephen Marsh.

“He’s nominated for the Derby and some other races and is a lovely colt on the way forward.”

Jockey Jason Waddell confirmed the high opinion held by his trainer.

“He can get the Derby distance no doubt,” he said. “He’s a big, strong colt who doesn’t know it and switches off in his races beautifully”, said Waddell.

Charm Spirit is also the sire of recent Melbourne Gr.2 winning 3YO filly Fascino and multiple Group 1 performed 2YO and Group winning 3YO filly Aretha.

Scorpz is one of 14 individual 3YO winners so far this season for Charm Spirit whose other stakes performers include highly regarded Melbourne galloper Heirborn and Jager Bombed.

Charm Spirit has 25 yearlings catalogued for the 2020 National Yearling Sale Series at Karaka next January.
