Moreno, the 4yo Charm Spirit gelding out of Freequence added another win at Rockhampton yesterday to take his record for this season to 6 wins from 8 starts. The gelding trained by Wayne Pomfrett who shares in the ownership now has a record of 18 starts for 7 wins.
Mackay trainer Wayne Pomfrett admits talented sprinter Moreno is still a work in progress but still won nicely at Rockhampton on Wednesday.
Pomfrett, a former policeman, has a great record with tried horses and Moreno looks set to become the latest.
“I rang Trojan Bloodstock to see if they had anything for sale and they recommended Moreno,” Pomfrett said.
“I looked up his form and noticed he beat Zakat who was going quite good at the time for James Cummings.
Pomfrett, 65, has only ever taken on a small team since quitting the police force more than two decades ago.
“I’ve had a lot of success since I quit being a policeman when I was 39 and I’ve won quite a few races," he said.
“I’ve won five Mackay trainers’ premierships and I was runner up another five or six times.”
Pomfrett said Moreno was very immature when he first entered his stables and had been tried in races between 1400 and 1600 metres.
“He was a skinny type and not very mature when he first arrived in my stables,” Pomfrett said.
“He’d been racing with a norton bit and some other gear but the first thing I did was take them all off and add a tongue-tie."
Moreno struck immediate success with the new gear change at his first start for Pomfrett winning a Benchmark race over 1100 metres in September.
“The only other thing I’ve done with him is keep him around a 1000 to 1200 metres," he said.
“He was racing up to 1600 metres in Sydney but I think he’ll make a fair horse over something a bit shorter.
“I’m still working him out but he seems to be growing into a very nice horse.”
Moreno is coming off a last start second to the Trinity Bannon-trained I Did It Again in a 1200-metre Class Six at Mackay on December 19.
“He could have led easily that day but we decided to sit off the pace and the leader skipped away more than two lengths on us and ran 1 min 8.9s,” Pomfrett said.
“That’s a time you don’t normally see run in Mackay and he was only just beaten.”
Moreno is one of 24 winners for Charm Spirit this season including Flemington Group 3 winner Samson who is targetted towards the Magic Millions 1400 meter race next week and other notable performers such as Sydney performers Kirwan's Lane and Nyami.
