A quartet of weekend winners, including black-type success, continued a great season for young international sire Rip Van Winkle (Galileo).

An impressive Melbourne/Sydney double on Saturday by Rip Van Winkle’s promising sons Mazzuro and Bastia was followed overnight with another son Almorox winning at Listed level in France and Rippin winning at Hawera yesterday.

The stylish wins of Bastia at Randwick and Mazzuro at Sandown suggest the potential to add further stakes success to their sire’s burgeoning record.

Trained by Kris Lees for prominent owner Alan Bell, Bastia has now won four times up to 1600m while the lightly raced Paul Richards trained galloper Mazzuro has won his last two middle distance runs from just five starts and looks an exciting stayer on the rise.

Rip Van Winkle’s hot run of form continued in France where his son Almorox scored his fourth win in succession in the Listed Grand Prix De Bordeaux over 1900m to take his earnings in excess of €316,000.

The Baker/Forsman trained Rippin got off the mark impressively at Hawera when having her first start for the stable to provide Rip Van Winkle with his 60th individual southern hemisphere winner for the season.

Recently Team Hawkes were responsible for winning the A$200,000 Gr.3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup with Kingsguard, a first-crop son who provided Rip Van Winkle with his 22nd individual stakes winner while daughters Seraphim and Pendleton have also enjoyed black-type success this season.

A European Champion Miler, Rip Van Winkle remains Galileo’s second highest rated galloper behind the mighty Frankel.
