Exciting 3YO filly First Impressions (Rip Van Winkle) powered home to win the $252,000 Gr.3 West Australian Oaks at Ascot in Perth on Saturday to provide her sire with a first-crop Australian stakes winner.
The talented New Zealand-bred filly relished the step up to 2400 metres to charge home and win her first Black Type event by nearly two lengths.
First Impressions had previously run third in the Listed Ascot One Thousand Guineas and put everything together for this eye catching Group performance to record her third win from just seven starts.
Safely through the run, First Impressions will contest the Gr.2 $400,000 Western Australian Derby over 2400m at Ascot on April 16th.
Purchased for $270,000 at the 2014 NZ Bloodstock Premier sale, First Impressions was the highest priced filly from the first Southern Hemisphere-bred crop of yearlings for Rip Van Winkle, the champion miler and multiple Gr.I winning son of Galileo who resides at Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand.
Rip Van Winkle has also sired another exciting first-crop 3YO filly Capella, who won the Gr.2 Eight Carat Classic and ran home strongly for fourth in the 2016 Gr.1 New Zealand Derby.
Capella is currently third favourite for the A$1million Gr.1 ATC Australian Oaks to be run at Randwick in Sydney this Saturday.
