While many of her prospective rivals went to war in a desperate Avondale Guineas at Ellerslie on Saturday, New Zealand Derby candidate Valley Girl continues to delight her connections in the build-up to the classic.
The Mastercraftsman filly, an upset winner of the Gr. 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes against older horses at Te Rapa two weeks ago, is doing everything right at her Ruakaka base ahead of the $750,000 BMW New Zealand Derby on Saturday week.
“Every time I look at her, she looks better than the last time,” co-trainer Chris Gibbs enthused. “She looks amazing. Her work’s been excellent in the last couple of weeks and she’s really in top order.
“Obviously we’re heading towards a very tough race, the Derby, but at this stage we couldn’t be happier with her.”
A winner of three of her six starts, Valley Girl is currently rated an $8 chance behind the $5 favourite Rangipo (winner of the Great Northern, Waikato and Avondale Guineas) in the Derby.
