The 7 length winning margin registered in Victoria yesterday by 3YO Arbitrage (Rip Van Winkle) has his connections focused on a start in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie next March.
Trained by Michael Moroney, the lightly raced Arbitrage appreciated the step up in distance to claim the 1912m contest in the style of a very promising galloper.
“He is a lovely colt who just keeps improving and the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby is the aim for him,” commented Moroney.
Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) will be represented in this Saturday’s Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas by Gr.3 winner Magic Dancer and dual winner Let Her Rip while recent debut winning 3YO filly Saintly Ripa and the hugely talented Capella are other daughters of Rip Van Winkle who share longer term Classic aspirations with the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks on their radar.
Rip Van Winkle was represented by a new stakes performer over the Flemington Carnival with the third placed finish of War Legend in the Listed VRC TCL Stakes while his daughter Stone Roses won the Saint-Cloud Prix Solitude, a Listed stakes race over 2000m in Paris yesterday.
Last week’s debut 3YO winner Invention World and second-up Australian winners Gervais and First Impressions have taken the tally of individual first-crop southern hemisphere winners for Rip Van Winkle to thirteen.
Rip Van Winkle has 14 Lots catalogued at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale of 2YO’s at Karaka, November 18th & 19th.
