War Legend scores for Rip Van Winkle
25 Aug 2015 | By Racenews

Trainer Michael Moroney produced 3YO Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) gelding War legend to win impressively at his first 3YO start, in Victoria yesterday.

A $150,000 purchase by Paul Moroney Bloodstock from the Valachi Downs 2014 Karaka Premier draft, War legend’s win over 1100m, at just his third start, confirmed the potential of more to come.

"War Legend is a promising classic individual in the making with the 1100m likely to be well short of his preferred distance, and is by exciting young sire Rip Van Winkle," said Michael Moroney.

War Legend is bred on the hugely successful Galileo/Danehill cross which has produced a whopping 47 individual stakes winners to date, including 13 individual Group One winners.

War Legend’s success follows the win of Rip Van Winkle filly Killer Woman over 1400m at her first 3YO start in South Africa recently.

Like War Legend, the connections of Killer Woman harbour classic aspirations for her and expect further improvement as she races over a longer trip.

Following an excellent start with his first crop 2YO’s last season it is no surprise to see the stock of Rip Van Winkle improve as they mature, bearing in mind he was rated the world’s leading miler on turf as a 3 & 4YO, winning Group One races from 1600m to 2100m.
