Taranaki trainer Allan Sharrock is predicting big things for promising mare Gypsy Fair after her impressive victory at Awapuni yesterday.
The four-year-old daughter of Falkirk showed an impressive turn of foot on a testing heavy surface to race away for her second win from just eight starts. The victory was expected by Sharrock and he predicts it certainly won’t be the last.
“I really like her and think she is a stakes winner in waiting,” he said. “She has taken her time to click to what it is all about but I wouldn’t be surprised if she won them in a row now.
“In 12 months’ time I think you will see a very good horse.”
Sharrock blames himself for a fresh-up defeat at Trentham in May following a lengthy summer spell.
“I thought she could win first up at Trentham as she had won a couple of jumpouts at home, but in hindsight I was probably too keen to get her to the races,” he said.
“She blew out that day but took plenty of improvement out of the race, so I was expecting her to be right in the fight on the weekend.”
Sharrock isn’t in a hurry to extend his charge at this stage, preferring to let her work through the grades before tackling better company.
“We will look around for a nice rating 75 for her next run and play things by ear from there,” he said. “There is no need to rush her into a stakes race now as she still has plenty to learn.”
