With 12 stakes horses in a first southern hemisphere crop that includes his 3YO sons Upham and Master Of Arts, first and third in the Gr.3 BRC Grand Prix Stakes at the weekend, Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) looks to have a great chance of siring another Derby winner as both sons are strongly fancied for the Gr.1 Queensland Derby on June 6th.
Mastercraftsman came close to Classic success last Spring when his daughter Thunder Lady finished second in the Gr.1 VRC Oaks at the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival after winning the Gr.2 VRC Wakeful Stakes at her previous start while in March another first-crop daughter, Spectacular Vision, finished second in the Gr.3 West Australian Oaks.
Group winners Thee Auld Floozie and Choice, together with Maastricht, Kansas Sunflower and Coachella are other first-crop daughters of Mastercraftsman to gain important black type success in the latest southern hemisphere season.
In the northern hemisphere Mastercraftsman’s highly rated son The Grey Gatsby won the Gr.1 French Derby last year while another son Kingston Hill enjoyed Classic glory when successful the Gr.1 The St Leger at Doncaster in England.
Mastercraftsman’s 19 northern hemisphere stakes horses also include Gr.3 Italian 1000 Guineas winner Vague Nouvelle.
